Artist Lee Han-woo was born in 1929 in Tonyoung at the tip of southern Korean peninsular. This area is famous with its picturesque view of myriads of small islands.The beauty of this area inspired many artists including world renowned composer Yoon I-Sang. He was working as a teacher in primary schools, and made his entry into the art circle in his mid-30s, and he won special prizes 6 times at the National Art Exhibition (NAE) since 1972, and he won the Price from Ministry of Culture in 1978.
He has been living in pursuant of art absolutism. He had the bittersweet experiences for beautiful completion in series of experiments to become the seed of the national art, while standing before the canvas with the happiness for new beginning. The works of artist Lee Han-woo begins from observing, feeling and discovering nature, and the inspiration and fluttering are expressed in restructuring in artistic effect and artistic philosophy on canvas. His efforts of approaching the objects with the technical aspects for expression with the precondition of freshness were the genuine search for the life in nature.
Beginning with the academic object in the beginning, his works evolved for sophisticated natural painting, to rich lines and powerful color in expressionism, but deepened to the symbolic painting of a kind in his later works. He drew mountains, oceans and islands for the spiritual world full of either, another word, the mountains far away embrace the village to keep the local aesthetics of traditional beauty of Korea with the “Beautiful Our Land” series.
In the time of much of chaos with diverse cultures exchanging, Lee Han-woo pursues his own sentiment and ethos of Korea and has been working on realizing the image. And, the series of “Beautiful Our Land” spread onto the vast size of canvas has been accepted as the most Korean like painting.
